Racking Inspections & Audits

For businesses across the Gold Coast, Tweed, and Brisbane, maintaining a safe warehouse environment is paramount, particularly given the frequency of forklift and racking-related incidents in Australian workplaces. Steel storage racking systems are the cornerstone of efficient warehouse operations, making regular inspections and audits indispensable.

Ensuring the safety, quality, and long-term structural integrity of your racking not only guarantees compliance with AS4084:2023 standards but also proactively identifies hazards and damage. This early detection prevents costly repairs, extends the lifespan of your racking, and ultimately enhances workplace safety, reduces accidents, and boosts overall efficiency and productivity.

Are You Up To Date On The Current Pallet Racking Compliance Codes AS4084:2023?

The updated Australian Standard AS 4084:2023 for Steel Pallet Racking now explicitly requires systems to be inspected at least every 12 months by a competent, external provider. To answer the question directly: ensuring your pallet racking solutions meet these stringent requirements is no longer optional – it’s a legal necessity.
Regular, professional inspections are the single best way to protect your team and inventory from the dangers of compromised installations, giving your business the actionable insight needed to manage the inevitable wear and tear of day-to-day operations.

What We Check During Your Racking Audit

Beyond physical condition, we ensure that the compliance aspects of your pallet racking and shelving, including load sign accuracy and clearances, are fully checked.

How Can You Ensure Your Pallet Racking System Is Compliant With AS4084-2023?

Compliance requires an ongoing commitment beyond a single audit. To meet the requirements of AS4084 and maintain a safe workspace, focus on these six key areas:

Documentation

Keep accurate, organised records of all past inspection reports, maintenance logs, and repair work carried out on your racking system.

Regular Inspections

Conduct professional, external racking audits at least every 12 months, as mandated by the current AS4084:2023 Australian Standard.

Training

Ensure all staff who operate forklifts or work near the racking receive appropriate safety training to minimise the risk of impact damage.

Repairs & Maintenance

Immediately action any identified damage, particularly high-risk items (RED or ORANGE). Never reload damaged racks until professional repairs are complete.

Signage

Clearly display all Safe Working Load signs. Ensure load limits are correct for the current racking configuration and visible to all users.

System Integrity

Maintain the integrity of the original design. Avoid modifying racking and ensure any changes are signed off by a structural engineer.

Why Are Racking Inspections and Audits Important For Your Business?

Racking inspections are fundamental to responsible business operation, serving as a critical preventative measure against catastrophic failure. By proactively identifying and addressing damage, businesses protect their most valuable assets—their people, their inventory, and their bottom line.

Reasons Why Racking Audits Are Important:

  • Avoid Heavy Fines & Penalties: A failure to maintain safe racking (AS4084) can result in severe Work Health and Safety (WHS) penalties and fines if an accident occurs.
  • Reduce Risk to Staff Safety: Directly mitigates the risk of a collapse, protecting employees from life-threatening injuries.
  • Protect Inventory & Assets: Reduces the risk of damage to expensive goods, equipment, and stock stored on the racks.
  • Ensure Insurance Coverage: Maintaining current compliance ensures your business remains eligible for insurance coverage in the event of an incident.
  • Extend Racking Lifespan: Early detection of minor issues prevents them from escalating into major, costly structural failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my pallet racking need to comply with Australian Standard AS4084?

Yes, all static steel pallet racking systems must comply with AS4084 if they fall within the scope of the standard. This is the legal benchmark for design, maintenance, and safety in Australia.

A full professional audit by a competent external person is now mandatory at least every 12 months under the recent AS4084:2023 update. But we recommend you to inspect your own racking system on a regular basis encase repairs are required before your next inspection period.

Our system uses four colours based on FEM guidelines: RED (Immediate action/offload required), ORANGE (Action required as soon as possible), GREEN (Damage requiring surveillance), and BLUE (General safety observations).

Racking purchased before 2012 can remain in use if it stays in its original position. However, to meet current safety standards and for peace of mind, it is highly recommended to upgrade any older system to comply with AS4084:2023.
